Each lasts one week. The autumn holidays run from November 1 to 7, 2027, and the Carnival holidays from February 28 to March 5, 2028.

Q: Why do the 2028 Easter holidays end on a Monday?

Easter Monday falls on April 17, 2028. It is included in the holiday period, which runs from Monday, April 3 to Monday, April 17. Classes resume on Tuesday, April 18.

Q: Do students have classes on Friday, May 26, 2028?

No, not in Flemish compulsory education. Ascension Thursday and the following Friday are school-free days. A different rule applies to part-time arts education and certain adult education courses.

The Carnival holidays last only one week in Flanders. The Easter holidays exceptionally end on a Monday in 2028, as 17 April is Easter Monday. Classes therefore resume on Tuesday 18 April.

Christmas Day and New Year’s Day fall during the Christmas holidays. Belgium’s National Day on 21 July and Assumption Day on 15 August fall during the summer holidays. These public holidays therefore do not extend the school holidays.

Which schools does the Flemish calendar apply to?

These dates apply to Dutch-speaking nursery, primary and secondary education. They apply in Flanders as well as to Dutch-speaking schools in Brussels. Adult education centres and part-time arts education also follow this calendar, with an exception for the Friday after Ascension Day.

Universities of applied sciences, universities and basic education centres set their own calendars. You should therefore contact the institution concerned directly.

Be aware of the Friday after Ascension Day

In compulsory Flemish education, pupils do not have classes on Thursday 25 May or Friday 26 May 2028. Part-time arts education is automatically entitled only to Ascension Day itself. In this type of education and in adult education, classes may also be held during the following weekend. The institution’s calendar remains the reference.

Is the calendar the same in Brussels?

It depends on which community the school belongs to. A Dutch-speaking school located in Brussels follows the Flemish calendar presented on this page. A French-speaking school follows the calendar of the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.

This distinction changes several important dates. In 2027-2028, the Flemish school year begins on 1^st September, compared with 30 August in French-speaking education. In Flanders, the autumn and Carnival holidays each last one week, whereas they last two weeks in French-speaking education.
